This game marks the end of what can be viewed only as a disappointing season. At the outset, we thought that we had our best team ever, and that we would certainly finish at or near the top of the division. As it played out, we finished 6th out of 8 teams in Division 3.  At least, we finished with a win, but it's scant consolation.

After the previous game, it seemed that Royal Harbor  might finally be starting to get the offense going again, but this loss indicates otherwise. Kudos to the 5 players on the Offensive Leaders chart, but the rest of the team contributed a total of only 2 hits to the offensive effort. Even in our division, a 4-run offense won't win many games. Maybe we're just waiting for the postseason tournament to break out of these doldrums (we hope).

This was a very competitive affair, with two evenly-matched teams both giving good performances. It had a little of everything: power  hitting, good pitching, and exciting (sometimes chaotic) baserunning, but it was marred by the 12 errors between the two teams. Kudos to Lou Branding for his 4th-inning Grand Slam!

For the second straight game, Royal Harbor lost a game by invoking the "Mercy Rule" (15-run difference after 5 innings). Royal Highlands came to this game ready to play. They piled on a bunch of hits, and they scored most of them. Considering the way they played, we probably would not win, but we could have hoped for a better showing than this.

Royal Harbor never trailed in this game, but Holiday Travel was never far behind. We came out of the gate a little faster, but Holiday Travel put together a 4-run 5th and a 6-run 7th to tie the game at 13-13. From that point on, it was anyone's game. After both teams failed to score in the 8th, Royal Harbor finally won the game in the 9th when Bill Eckbreth doubled, Dave Koberlein walked, and Bob Francesconi hit a lazy single over shortstop to score Bill.

Spanish Village earned this win with great play on both offense and defense. Their infield not only made good plays, they made them look easy. Meanwhile, Royal Harbor's offense didn't show  up, and we managed to score only 2 runs on 13  scattered hits (all singles). It isn't the game of which we are most proud.

Royal Harbor finally put together a good offense with an excellent defense and, in doing so, broke its 6-game losing streak. We welcomed aboard Will Worthington, who, in his first game for Royal Harbor, poked a double in his only charged time-at-bat, so he batted 1.000 for the game. If the team can play this well consistently, we should be able to climb in the standings.

Royal Harbor continues to struggle for a win. This was a closely-fought game, with Royal Harbor leading thoughout the whole game, except for the last inning (the only one that matters). One more hit or one fewer error could have changed the loss to a win. The point is that the team is better than its 6-game losing streak would seem to indicate. While it will eventually regain its winning ways, we can no longer entertain thoughts of challenging for the division lead.

There's a simple explanation for Royal Highlands' decisive win: extra-base hits. It seems that every time we looked up, our outfielders were running to the outfield fence to retrieve a ball. In one inning, their first four batters hit 3 triples and a double. Royal Highlands has the power to do that, but we don't, and the field on which we play has a huge outfield that favors a team with raw power. The answer is to get more hits, but we didn't.

Arlington Ridge came on strong in the middle innings, and they sealed their win in the 8th with 5 big runs. Although they have struggled through most of the season, they had enough to humble Royal Harbor, a team that now has a streak of 4 consecutive losses and is starting to struggle itself. Kudos to Bill Mann for his 2-run inside-the-park homer in the 8th, but it just wasn't enough to overcome Arlington Ridge's lead.

Royal  Harbor played well on both offense and defense, scoring 19 runs (enough to win most games) and committing only 1 error (an excellent defense). Holiday Travel's offense, however,  was just unbeatable. Batter after batter drove the ball into the outfield gaps for extra bases. Holiday Travel always gets stronger at this time of year, when many of their players return, and if this game is any indication, they will now climb steadily higher in the standings.

We suspected it wasn't our day when Spanish Village's 4th batter hit a grand slam. Then it got worse (they added another grand slam in the 6th inning). Spanish Village absolutely dominated this game, while Royal Harbor could muster only 6 scattered hits and no runs. This is the first time in memory that our Offensive Leaders chart is empty. If there is a bright spot, it was our defense, which committed only 1 error. It's not much to cheer about.

It must have been all the holiday celebration: we just seemed lethargic.  We could muster  only  14 hits and only 1 extra-base hit (a double). Our infield fielding was something less than spectacular. We have a quasi-excuse, in that many were playing unfamiliar positions, but the infield errors produced the difference in the final score. There were two bright spots in the game: our outfield played a great game, and Bernie Veronee pitched well.

Except for one 4th-inning play, during which we committed both our errors, we played a pretty good defensive game. That was fortunate, because we didn't have our usual offense. The five players in the Offensive Leaders chart did all the heavy lifting, but the rest were well below .500 for the game. Still, winning the game cures a multitude of sins.

This was a great game between evenly-matched teams that saw the lead change hands several times. Royal Highlands won  for one simple reason: they apparently were determined to win and wouldn't settle for less. Going into the last inning, we were down one run. We scored five and we were looking forward to a win, but they also scored five for the walkoff win. In retrospect, they might have just wanted a win more than we did. Anyway, they got it.

Arlington Ridge scored the inning-maximum 5 runs in 3 of the first 4 innings, and didn't look a bit like their 1-and-6 record. While some of that was our gift of sloppy fielding, they certainly looked good, and we wondered whether they could keep it up. They couldn't. They struggled to post 2 runs in the last half of the game, while we posted 17. The only time we led was the last inning, but that's the only one that counts.

The last time we played Holiday Travel (Nov. 1), we barely eked out a win by 2 runs. This game was very different. Although Holiday Travel  jumped out to an early 4-run lead, we got to work and soon had the lead back. One reason for our recent success is the left side of our infield, which is playing great defense. Ed Branch (3B) and Bill Hartness (SS) both pulled off good plays, with Bill's game-ending double-play judged the play of the day.

This is not the same Spanish Village team we've seen in prior seasons.  The faces are all the same, but this is a much better team. Although we jumped out to a substantial early lead, they just kept chipping away at it, and really had us on the ropes in the middle innings.  Fortunately, we put together a 5-run 6th, and then managed to hold Spanish Village in check for the rest of the game. Both teams had way too many walks. Boyd St.Clair made two great catches in left field, and Ed Branch  pulled off a 5-unassisted, 5-2 double play that really looked impressive. Bill Hartness left the ground to snare a hot liner over shortstop.

Royal Harbor  scored 4 runs in the first inning, but couldn't keep up that pace. By the end of the game, Royal Harbor had stopped scoring, but Plantation was still posting runs. Plantation also earns kudos for efficiency: they scored more runs on fewer hits. If there is a bright spot in Royal Harbor's performance, it's  the fielding. After four games in which we committed a total of 20 errors, we got through this game with only one miscue.

Royal Highlands arrived apparently ready to play ball. They took the lead in the top of the first inning by scoring the inning-maximum 5 runs (as they did again in the 2nd and the 3rd) and never looked back. Royal Harbor was forced to play catch-up though the entire game, and we managed to stay within a few runs of them, but never took the lead. This was probably the best game Royal Highlands has played this season. If they can consistently play like this, they are certain to climb in the standings.

Some may feel that this loss was a result of the baserunning blunder on the last play but, in fact, we had several chances to put away our opponent, and could never quite manage it. In the end, they put us away with a 4-run eighth inning. We have to tip our hats to Spanish Village; although they trailed the whole game, they had it when it counted.

This was two games in one. After the first three innings, we led 11-0, had only one error, and we were cruising effortlessly.  Then everything changed. In the last 5 innings, we struggled to post 2 more runs, while committing 7 errors in the process. Meanwhile, Holiday Travel chipped away at our lead, and we were lucky to end up with a win. One of the few bright spots was Tom Rowlee's performance: he pitched a competant 1-walk game and at the plate he went 4-for-4 with a double. How could we ask more?

Arlington Ridge's first three batters all reached base on our errors, and it looked like it just wasn't going to be our day, but we managed to calm down and got out of the inning with minimal damage. In our half of the first, we started to turn the game around, building a lead which was never serioiusly challenged, even though we continued to make errors. Tom Rowlee pitched a great four innings, as expected. Bernie Veronee took over in the 5th and (after some initial jitters) closed out the game well.
